Frequently Asked Questions

The Rechargeable Lighter

Where is the lighter made?

Our products and packaging are designed in Australia and manufactured in PRC.

How is Flint different from a traditional lighter?

Our Rechargeable Lighter is electric. It uses a high-voltage current to create a small arc of plasma between two metal electrodes. Because it’s fully electric, it produces no flame and requires no fuel. The lighter is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery and can be used again and again with a simple charge.

Most traditional lighters use pressurised butane gas, which, when ignited, produces a flame. Once the butane runs out, the lighter needs to be refilled – but in many cases, these lighters end up being disposed of.

How does the lighter work?

The lighter uses its rechargeable battery as the energy source. When you press the ignition button, a high-voltage electrical current passes between two metal electrodes, creating a small, concentrated arc of plasma. This arc is actually hotter than a traditional flame but contained in a precise area. Simply place what you'd like to light directly in the arc's path, and it will ignite quickly.

Does the lighter make a sound?

The lighter produces a subtle high-frequency sound as electricity travels between the nodes to sustain the arc. While not loud, some animals and small children may be sensitive to this sound, so please use it with care around them.

Usage & Safety

How do I operate the lighter?

A simple guide for the Rechargeable Lighter, to ensure intentional & safe usage.

Step 1.
Slide the top button forward, exposing the ignition button.

Step 2.
Press and hold the ignition button to ignite the arc.

Step 3.
Touch the arc against the item you wish to light. It will only take a second or two for the material to catch a light.

Step 4.
Release the ignition button.

Step 5.
Slide the top button backwards to cover the ignition button.

What is the best way to use the lighter?

To get the best out of the lighter, use the arc in short sharp bursts. Pressing the ignition button down for long periods will drain the battery quickly. The device is also equipped with a safety mechanism, meaning the arc automatically extinguishes after 7 seconds.

A standard candle wick will take a second to light: as soon as a spark appears, release the ignition button and move the lighter away from the flame.

Use the same process with lighting gas stovetops: move the lighter away from the open flame as quickly as possible.

What can it be used for?

The lighter can be used in place of your existing lighter to light candle wicks, incense, paper, gas stoves, fireplaces, or BBQs.

Is there anything that can’t be lit?

We advise not using the lighter on anything not mentioned in the above list.

Do I need to clean it?

Visible residue can build up on the tip of the arc after continued use, affecting performance. Gently clean away any wax, dirt & debris from the arc with a soft dry cloth, to avoid build up that may stop the arc from igniting. Keep fingers away from the ignition button when cleaning to avoid ignition and touching the hot arc.

Where should I store the lighter?

To prolong the life of your lighter, store in a cool, dry place. Keep away from children and pets.

Battery & Charging

How long does it last before I need to recharge?

The lighter has been tested to ignite over 1,000 times on a single charge, with each ignition lasting around 1–2 seconds.

However, like all lithium-ion devices, the battery will naturally lose charge over time – even when not in use, so performance may vary depending on how frequently it’s used.

Longer or more frequent ignitions will also drain the battery more quickly and may require more regular recharging.

How do I recharge it?

The lighter comes with its own charging cable. Simply plug the cable into the USB-C charging port located on the bottom of the device and connect it to a wall charger, power bank, or your computer.

Standard charge time is approx 2 hours.

Please ensure the wall adapter or power bank you’re using has an output of DC 5V ±0.5V and below 3000mA. Do not use fast chargers that output 9V, 12V, or higher, unless they’re smart chargers that automatically default to 5V for low-power devices.

When should I charge it?

For optimum device life, we recommend recharging your lighter when the battery drops to 30–40%.

Please avoid letting it run flat.

The battery light on the back of the device will indicate when charging is required:

3 lights = 100%
2 lights = 66%
1 light = 33% (Please recharge).

Once connected to power, the indicator lights on the back of the device will become visible. When all three lights are illuminated, the battery is fully charged.

A full charge will take approximately 2 hours.

While the lighter has built-in overcharge protection (meaning it will automatically stop charging when the battery reaches 100%), we always recommend unplugging it once charging has completed.

I’ve lost my charging cable, can I use any charging cable?

The lighter is compatible with any standard USB-C charging cable. Please note: if you have an original model, you will need to use a Micro USB cable – available from most retailers.

Please ensure the wall adapter or power bank you’re using has an output of DC 5V ±0.5V and below 3000mA. Do not use fast chargers that output 9V, 12V, or higher, unless they’re smart chargers that automatically default to 5V for low-power devices.

Alternatively, you can purchase a replacement cable from us.

Please contact us and include your delivery address with your request.

Can the lighter be charged outside of New Zealand and Australia where there is a difference in voltage?

The charging cable provided with your lighter is universally compatible, enabling usage in any country when paired with the appropriate adapter for that region.

Please ensure the wall adapter or power bank you’re using has an output of DC 5V ±0.5V and below 3000mA. Do not use fast chargers that output 9V, 12V, or higher, unless they’re smart chargers that automatically default to 5V for low-power devices.

Shipping, Travel & Regulations

Can I take it on a plane?

Unfortunately, due to its battery, the lighter is classed as a dangerous good and is subject to strict regulations for air travel and freight.

Most airlines do not allow electric lighters in carry-on or checked luggage.

We recommend contacting your airline for more information and approval before packing the lighter.

Battery specifications (for airline approval):

UN Number: UN3481 – Lithium-ion battery contained in equipment
Voltage: 3.7V
Capacity: 400mAh
Energy: 1.486Wh

If you're planning to give a lighter as a gift while travelling, we recommend posting it separately. Just be sure to check the shipping guidelines of your carrier, as well as any import regulations for the destination country.

Can I ship the lighter domestically or internationally?

Yes, the lighter can be shipped both domestically and internationally, but there are restrictions. We recommend reviewing your carrier’s policy on shipping lithium-ion batteries to ensure you understand the requirements set by both the carrier and the destination country.

You can find Australia Post’s guidelines on shipping lithium batteries here, and New Zealand Post’s guidelines here.

Repairs, Parts & End of Life

What happens when the lighter has reached the end of its life?

Please recycle your lighter at your local e-waste depot. To protect the environment and human health, avoid disposing of the lighter in landfill.

  • For customers in Australia, you can find your nearest e-waste depot here.
  • For customers in New Zealand, you can find your nearest e-waste depot here.
  • If you’re outside Australia or New Zealand, we recommend contacting your local waste management authority to locate your nearest e-waste recycling provider.
Can I purchase a replacement battery?

Unfortunately, the battery used in the lighter is not available separately and cannot be replaced by the consumer at home.

Personalisation & Gifting

Do you offer engraving?

Unfortunately, we do not currently offer engraving services. The lighter shell is made of metal (Zinc Alloy) and this can be engraved should you wish to take your lighter to a local engraving provider.

Do you offer gift wrapping?

This is something we are working on!

Troubleshooting

My lighter will not ignite.

Have you located the ignition button?
It has been intentionally designed to sit under the top sliding button.

Have you charged the device?
The battery light on the back of the device will give you an indication of how much charge is remaining.

Have you cleaned your device?
Residue can build up on the prongs of the lighter which can stop the arc from igniting. Gently clean the prongs with a soft dry cloth (avoiding touching the arc with your fingers).

If your lighter still does not work, please submit a claim request here.
